FAA Updates Hangar Use Guidelines

FAA recently updated guidance on hangar use restrictions, clarifying what activities airports can and cannot prohibit in leased hangar space.

Hangar workshop

The new guidance reinforces that hangars may be used for aircraft storage and related aeronautical activities including maintenance, but airports cannot universally ban all non-aeronautical items.

Key Clarifications

Reasonable personal property like toolboxes, parts storage, and small refrigerators cannot be prohibited if they don’t interfere with aircraft storage. Airports must allow space for activities directly supporting flight operations.

Commercial enterprises unrelated to aviation remain prohibited. Running a furniture business from your hangar still violates grant assurances.

Practical Impact

Pilots can maintain modest workshop areas within their hangars. Tool benches, parts cabinets, and maintenance equipment are explicitly permitted under aeronautical use definitions.

Airports may still enforce fire codes and safety requirements. Fuel storage, painting operations, and welding may require special permits regardless of FAA guidance on general use restrictions.
