How to size a hangar for a small airplane
Use the current pilot’s operating handbook, aircraft flight manual, type-certificate data, or manufacturer drawing for the exact model and configuration. Modifications can change dimensions: larger tires, antennas, winglets, a different propeller, or a folded-wing system may affect the required opening or interior envelope.
1. Record the aircraft envelope
- Wingspan: the widest fixed dimension in the normal storage configuration.
- Overall length: from the forward-most propeller or nose point to the tail.
- Overall height: include antennas, beacon, propeller position, and landing-gear configuration.
- Wheel track and turning geometry: needed to evaluate the tow path and T-hangar pockets.
- Door-sensitive points: high tail, winglets, pitot tubes, propeller tips, and antennas.
2. Measure the clear door opening
Do not rely on the advertised building width. Measure the clear opening between door jambs and the clear height beneath the lowest obstruction. Sliding-door overlap, bifold hinges, hydraulic-door frames, weather seals, tracks, and uneven pavement can reduce usable clearance.
The basic screening calculations are:
- Clear door width must exceed aircraft wingspan plus deliberate lateral clearance.
- Clear door height must exceed the aircraft’s highest point plus vertical clearance.
- Usable interior depth must exceed aircraft length plus room for the closed door, tail, propeller, and safe movement.
There is no universal clearance number that is safe for every aircraft, door, tug, slope, or pilot. More clearance is needed when entering at an angle, towing alone, crossing a drainage lip, or moving through a flexible or wind-sensitive door.
3. Map the movement path
Sketch the aircraft from apron to parked position. Check pavement slope, door sill, drainage channel, columns, fire equipment, electrical panels, adjacent aircraft, and the space required to attach a towbar or tug. In a T-hangar, verify both the center fuselage bay and the wing/tail pockets; two aircraft with similar wingspans may fit very differently.
4. Add working and inspection space
If the lease permits owner maintenance, allow access to inspection panels, oil service points, tires, battery compartments, control surfaces, and the engine cowling. A hangar that technically closes around an airplane may still be impractical if every task requires pulling it outside.
T-hangar vs box hangar
Choose a T-hangar when:
- one aircraft fits the exact geometry with comfortable door and pocket clearance;
- the primary need is secure weather protection rather than workshop space;
- airport availability and rent favor the T-hangar;
- you can enter, turn, and tow the aircraft without risky angles;
- the lease permits the limited aviation-related equipment you plan to store.
Choose a box hangar when:
- you need access on all sides of the aircraft;
- the aircraft’s tail, wing, or gear geometry fits poorly in a T-hangar;
- more than one aircraft or substantial aviation equipment must be accommodated;
- approved maintenance, workshop, or office functions require separated space;
- a rectangular door and floor plan materially reduce towing risk.
A box hangar is not automatically superior. Its value depends on usable dimensions, door design, utilities, lease rights, and whether the added floor area is actually needed.
When a community hangar makes sense
Community storage can be a practical answer where individual units have long waiting lists. Before signing, determine who may move the aircraft, how access works outside staffed hours, whether the operator uses wing walkers or tugs, and how damage is documented. Ask for the operator’s insurance requirements and obtain written confirmation from your aircraft insurer that the arrangement is acceptable.
Inspect spacing between aircraft and the process for repositioning them. Convenience depends less on total building size than on whether your airplane can be retrieved without repeatedly moving several others.
Portable aircraft hangars: verify approval first
Portable does not mean permit-free. A fabric or relocatable structure may still need landowner consent, airport approval, a building permit, engineered anchoring, wind and snow-load compliance, setbacks, fire-department access, and insurer acceptance. Airport leases may prohibit tenant-installed structures or require review through the airport’s approved layout and development process.

- Sliding doors: mechanically simple, but tracks, overlap, ice, debris, and manual effort affect operation.
- Bifold doors: open vertically and can preserve apron space, but clear height, cables/straps, safety devices, and powered operation need inspection.
- Hydraulic one-piece doors: create a canopy when open and provide a wide clear opening, but impose structural loads and require maintained hydraulic and safety systems.
- Stacking or multi-panel doors: can create a broad opening while using multiple leaves; verify seals, guides, and where panels stack.

Visit after rain if possible. Look for roof stains, daylight at seams, standing water, blocked drains, damp insulation, corrosion on metal framing, and water tracks beneath the door. Condensation can occur even without a roof leak when warm humid air meets a cold aircraft or metal surface.
Electrical service
Confirm outlet count, circuit capacity, lighting, billing, and allowed equipment. Do not assume the lease permits heaters, battery maintainers, refrigerators, compressors, welding, or extension-cord use. Ask who maintains panels and whether electrical work requires airport approval.
Fire and hazardous materials
Airport rules and locally adopted fire/building codes control fuel, oil, compressed gas, charging, heaters, hot work, and flammable-liquid storage. Get the written rules from airport management and the local authority having jurisdiction. Do not copy another tenant’s setup as evidence that it is permitted.
Lease and airport-use rules
At federally obligated airports, FAA policy treats aircraft storage as the primary purpose of aeronautical hangars. The FAA permits aviation-related equipment and some incidental non-aeronautical items when they do not interfere with aircraft storage or access, but it identifies uses such as residences, non-aeronautical businesses, household storage that displaces aviation, and hazardous-material storage as impermissible under the policy.
